Founded in 1986, the Canadian Hatching Egg Producers (CHEP) represents 235 farmers from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec. CHEP is a national organization funded through farmer levies based on the broiler hatching eggs produced.
Most people think an egg is an egg – this is not the case. There is the conventional white or brown egg and the broiler hatching egg. To distinguish the two types, the white or brown egg is produced specifically for human consumption and purchased primarily in grocery stores, while in contrast, the broiler hatching egg is a fertilized egg that is sent to commercial hatcheries where they are placed into specialized incubators and hatch 21 days later into broiler chicks. These broiler chicks are then sold to chicken farmers who raise them into chickens. The cycle of converting a broiler hatching egg into a fully grown chicken takes approximately nine weeks time to complete.
The broiler hatching egg industry is a highly specialized industry that is at the foundation of Canada’s chicken industry.
